CNA Exam Study Guide: Preparing for the Written and Skills Portions

CNA testing programs are administered under state-specific requirements, so do not assume one national study guide describes every candidate's process. Before building your plan, find the current candidate handbook or testing information published by the authority or testing administrator for the state where you are seeking certification.

Prepare knowledge and skills together

If your program includes both a knowledge examination and a skills evaluation, prepare for both. Written review can reinforce safety, communication and care principles, while hands-on repetition builds sequence and confidence. When appropriate, verbalize the sequence, safety checks and resident communication as you practice. Explaining what you are doing can expose missing steps.

Do not simply memorize the answer to a missed practice question. Identify the principle behind it and return to the applicable official content. Rotate through stronger and weaker skills, then give extra repetitions to sequences you forget under pressure.

Before the final days, review your official candidate handbook for identification, arrival, scheduling, rescheduling and test-day requirements. A CNA study guide is most useful when it connects knowledge review with repeated, accurate skills practice under the rules of your actual testing program.
