About the RHIT certification
The exam has 150 questions (130 scored and 20 unscored pretest items). Testing time is 3 hours 25 minutes after a 5-minute confidentiality agreement, for a 3-hour-30-minute appointment. The passing score is 300. You must wait 30 days before a retake application can be approved. A health-informatics degree alone does not qualify.

How to prepare
01
Use the RHIT exam content outline effective for your test date. Domain weights are published as ranges.
02
Split study time between record integrity and revenue cycle — those two domains are the largest.
03
Practice coding from documentation, queries, denials, and DNFB alongside release-of-information rules.
04
Submit the early-tester form only in your final term, and keep the one-year transcript deadline on your calendar.
05
Book the Pearson VUE seat inside the 120-day window. A missed window means a new application and fee.
FAQ
What education do I need for the RHIT?
An associate degree from a CAHIIM-accredited Health Information Management program, or a qualifying foreign HIM program. AHIMA does not currently accept a health-informatics degree by itself.
How soon can I retake the RHIT?
Submit a new application and fee. AHIMA holds RHIT retake approval for 30 days before you can schedule again.
